Insilicos Awarded Grant to Study Ensemble Learning Methods
Seattle, December 18, 2008 - Insilicos today announced that the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (part of the National Institutes of Health) has awarded the company a $900,000 grant to study Ensemble Learning. Ensemble Learning is a technique that uses a "committee" of statistical models to make a more accurate prediction than any single model. Ensemble Learning is particularly well-suited to the large data sets of biomedical research.
"Machine Learning is a key component of Insilicos' research efforts," said Insilicos Vice President of Information Services Brian Pratt. The challenge with Ensemble Learning has been that it requires extensive calculations, requiring hours or even days. "The solution is to use parallel computing, to use more than one computer at a time on the problem," continued Pratt. "An added bonus is that we can use Ensemble Learning with our Cloud Computing technology to make this approach highly scalable, fast, and cost effective for a wide range of problems."
Insilicos has received over $3 million in NIH grants, which support the company's research towards diagnostics for cardiovascular disease.Insilicos LLC develops life science software for pharmaceutical development, biological research and clinical diagnostics.
