Seattle, February 6, 2006: Insilicos today announced that the Washington Technology Center has awarded Insilicos a Research and Technology Development (RTD) grant to further development of its software tools aimed at detecting cardiovascular disease (CVD). Insilicos was one of eight Washington state companies given an RTD grant -- awarded to companies teamed with Washington researchers to commercialize new technologies.
Insilicos has developed software to more accurately analyze data obtained from analysis of plasma. The company is partnering with Dr. Tomas Vaisar, at the University of Washington to develop a faster, more affordable diagnostic test using the company's software. Through this grant, the new tool will be tested in the clinical setting. Insilicos is also exploring the application of this novel diagnostic tool for use by physicians to diagnose and treat other medical conditions, including diabetes.
Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. Nearly one-quarter of all Americans has some form of CVD and six million patients are admitted to the hospital for treatment annually. Diagnostic tests that measure the ratio of different forms of cholesterol are the most common way to determine individuals at risk for heart disease. "But these tests miss most people who will develop heart disease -- at best they only identify 20-30% of the population at risk," said Kenneth Lans, M.D., Director of Clinical Products for Insilicos. "The medical community knows that new tests are needed that give a clearer, more accurate picture of which people really are at greater risk and thus should be getting appropriate and, often, more aggressive treatment.Insilicos LLC develops life science software for pharmaceutical development, biological research and clinical diagnostics.
